Around the United States, many cafes following a new model are opening. These cafes offer some of the same things that cafes have always offered, including hand-crafted drinks, comfortable chairs, and a Wifi signal. However, these new cafes offer something that stands apart from the traditional model. These cafes have cats! You can enjoy your coffee while you pet some of the cafe’s resident feline friends. But why would a cafe follow this new trend? There are a number of benefits to having cats in a cafe. The first is simple: petting cats is relaxing. It has been proven that petting cats can help relieve stress and anxiety. It can also lower blood pressure and release oxytocin and seratonin–the happy chemicals in the brain. Cat cafes also have some benefits for the cats. They offer a relaxed atmosphere for people to get to know the cats before they decide to foster or adopt a new pet. It also gives cats that have not been adopted yet a chance to socialize and get used to being around people. The funds that come from the profits of the cafe are used to pay for things that the cats need, including everything from cat litter to vaccinations. By merging the concept of a traditional cafe with a cat shelter, both the customers and the cats benefit.
